The Social Sciences are fields of study that help us understand why people (and animals) behave the way they do.
Social scientists study things like:
- Mental illness
- The influence of government on individuals
- Crime and other types of deviant behavior
- Perception
- Race and ethnicity
- The origins of the human species
- Brain development
- Social welfare
Careers in Social Sciences can be research oriented, person-to-person oriented, or some combination of the two. Researchers, for example, may study the brain to look at the brain-behavior connections. They may study human behavior to help companies or employers determine needs in service, education, marketing, or product development.
Person-to-person careers include:
- Positions within charitable organizations
- Social Services Offices
- Government Agencies
- Public Schools
- Counseling
- Human Resources
- Law Enforcement
