Social Sciences

social_peopleThe Social Sciences are fields of study that help us understand why people (and animals) behave the way they do.

Social scientists study things like:

  • Mental illness
  • The influence of government on individuals
  • Crime and other types of deviant behavior
  • Perception
  • Race and ethnicity
  • The origins of the human species
  • Brain development
  • Social welfare

Careers in Social Sciences can be research oriented, person-to-person oriented, or some combination of the two. Researchers, for example, may study the brain to look at the brain-behavior connections. They may study human behavior to help companies or employers determine needs in service, education, marketing, or product development.

Person-to-person careers include:

  • Positions within charitable organizations
  • Social Services Offices
  • Government Agencies
  • Public Schools
  • Counseling
  • Human Resources
  • Law Enforcement
